What do I have to do to get the truth?

sorry to say that knowing the truth won't help. if you continue to stay with him, you will be constantly looking over your shoulder. either you trust him (and i don't think you will) or you get out. professional counseling can help you get passed this but since you are not married and have no kids, the money on counseling may be better spent finding a new place to live
